Out of the blue, my mother-in-law just asked, “I wonder who killed that man and his sister in Nashville?”

How should I know?  And it’s not the first time you’e asked.  You didn’t even know them so why are you obsessing about it?

“Did you hear about the woman who died on that plane?  She ran out of oxygen.”

“Vietnam.  My stepson was a pilot in Vietnam until he got his face blowed off.”

“Did you know Castro has a sister who lives in Florida?  She won’t have anything to do with him.”

“Whatever happened to that man who murdered his wife?”

“Did you hear about the little boy who was run over by a taxi and killed?  It was awful.”

I’ve hated mines ever since my friend’s dad was killed in one.  A piece of slate fell on him and it killed him.

[pause]

Richard’s Uncle Bryant died in a mine.  But it was a heart attack.

“That old astronaut died today.”

I’m in Kentucky right now on a weekend of vacation fun with my sister. I took the MiL to her sister’s as well.  As we approached Greenville, she said:

“Be careful on this curve.  One of my high school friends died going too fast.”

Then we passed a cemetary,

“That’s the black cemetary. Only blacks are buried there.”

“I wonder how that girl died.”
“I went to bed early. My back hurt so I had to lay down.”
“Did you see about that girl who died? I guess she lived in Gallatin.”
“Oh my God! Did you see that car under the semi? It’s a wonder anyone lived through that.” (referring to a wreck on I-40 this morning in which a little car unfortunately ran under a log truck.)
As she walks outside to the front porch, “I wonder if anything dug up the flowers again last night.”
Comes back inside, “I spent all day bent over the dryer yesterday. I did the dishes twice.”
Me: “Here, sit down in this chair.” (it helps the back a lot)
“I don’t have time to sit down in the morning. I have to fix his lunch.”

“Boris Yeltsin died.”

pause…  “I wonder if he was drunk. He had a drinking problem.”

“Did you hear about that baby that was run over and crushed to death?”

In all seriousness, I am so sorry for the grandmother and the rest of the family.  Truly a sad day for that poor family.

“My friend’s father was killed in a coal mine.  A big slab of slate fell on him.”
